DeKalb County Fire and Rescue
DeKalb County Fire and Rescue is the exclusive provider of Fire services for the unincorporated areas of DeKalb County, Georgia, and for all municipalities within the County’s borders with the exceptions of Atlanta city limits, the City of Decatur, and Stone Mountain Park.
The department consists of 26 fire stations and assorted apparatus. The department serves a population near 700,000 (Georgia's largest county in population density). The department exceeds any agency in the state, including its neighbor, the City of Atlanta. All firefighters within the agency are also Georgia certified EMT's or Paramedics. With this certification, crews also respond to most calls for Emergency Medical Services.
Prior to July 6, 2010, the department operated its own Advanced Life Support Rescues (Ambulances) out of each station. The County government then awarded a new 911 contract to provide emergency ambulance services to Rural Metro. Following the contract, the department cut its ambulance fleet in half.
In June of 2013, the county government contracted with American Medical Response (AMR) to provide 911 ambulance services countywide. Following the AMR contract, the department ceased the entirety, with the exception of one, of its ambulances. The lone county Advanced Life Support Rescue (Ambulance) is housed almost centrally at Station 22.
The County is divided into five battalion districts.

* History
The first fire service in DeKalb County was a private service, Draughans Fire and Insurance Salvage Company formed in 1933 on a subcriber fee basis of $72.00 a year protecting the Druid Hills and Emory areas only.non-subscribers had no fire protection.in 1937 County Commissioner Charlton A. Mathews authorized creation of a County Fire Department and arrainged for the county to take over the private Fire service along with the volunteer community Fire Departments in DeKalb. (City of Decatur's Fire Department, organized in 1914,remains independent of DeKalb) Organizing the DeKalb County Fire Department,appointing W. E. Bridge Fire Chief, M.J. Lynch Assistant Chief, and J.B. Gray Fire Marshall. with Station# 1 located on North Decatur Rd.The turnout gear at that time consisted of rain coats and fisherman's rain bonnets. in 1941 turnout gear improved when the Department was donated several used turnout coats from the Atlanta Fire Department and the Federal Civil Defense program donated two dozen White painted WW1 Surplus Doughboy type Military helmets. the first New Apparatus was also purchased that year,a pirsch engine. In 1947 County Commissioner Scott Candler began a program to expand the department,increasing pay and training,upgrading equipment,issuing New Turnout gear and creating special Fire protection tax districts to build Station #2, Brookhaven(1949),Station#3 Avondale Estates (1947),Station#4, Chamblee(1950),and Station#5 Tucker (1949). In 1954 Dekalb opened a Fire Headquarters and Communication center in the Calloway Building in Decatur. by 1957 using the special Fire district tax, the Department had grown to Nine stations,with 16 Engines, 2 Aerial trucks,2 Water tankers, (needed before extensions of county water mains in the 1960s)a Heavy Rescue unit, and a Resuscitator and light truck,
and increased staffing to over 100 Firefighters.1958 saw the introduction of new SCBA equipment and the Department divided into three battalions. In 1961 Station #10 was opened on Constitution Rd, and Station #11 on Memorial Dr in Stone Mountain.a new Station #1 was completed in early 1962 on Clifton Rd. and in November 1962, DeKalb Voters approved a County wide Referendum to increase property taxes to fund a 10 year program to Build and equip seven new modern stations around the county while also funding relocation and the replacement construction of existing stations that had initially been opened between 1951and 1955 in locations constructed from Government Surplus pre-fab Quanset building kits. These were Station #6 (Rebuilt,now #26)McCafee Rd, Station#7(Rebuilt), Glenwood, Station#8, Briarcliff and Lavista Rds,(moved to Clairmont Rd).Station #9,(McClarty Fire Equipment Supply warehouse)Lawrenceville Hwy and Frazier Rd.(moved to North Druid Hills Rd).. These additions prepared the Department for the massive growth in the County during the 1960s and 70s, which Transformed DeKalb from Rural in the 1950s to an Urbanized metro Atlanta county today.
